Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (The Iron Lady) (born November 19, 1917 – 31 October 1984) was the Prime Minister of the India for 3 successive times from 1966 to 1977 and for a fourth term from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She was elected Congress President in 1959 and four years later she was elected the party’s president. Born on in a well known family, she was perhaps destined for a renowned political career.  Smt. Indira gandhi went University of Oxford in Britain, where she learned history, political science and economics. As the Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi was well known for her political ruthlessness and exceptional centralization of power. Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
